Synopsis: Lt. Commander Dax and Lt. Commander Worf are sent on a mission to rendezvous with an informant.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of just how much power the Eros-driven irrational unconscious can exert over the Logos-driven rational conscious ego, in certain circumstances.

In “Change of Heart” the married couple, Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax and Lt. Commander Worf, are sent on a mission to rendezvous with a Cardassian operative to retrieve vital information for the war effort. The informant tells them to meet him on a jungle-like planet. Dax and Worf must make a two-day trek into the wilds, and when they camp for the night they are attacked by Jem’Hadar soldiers. Dax is badly injured and when they are close to the rendezvous point, she can go no further. Worf heads out alone to complete the mission, but has a change of heart and instead returns to Dax, and bring her back to safety for vitally needed medical treatment. She is safe, but Worf is dressed down by Captain Benjamin Sisko for his choice. Worf tells Sisko he would do it again and Sisko has to admit, he would have made the same choice.

At the end of this episode Worf tells Sisko that he did not understand what his wedding vows really meant until he realized that he could not stand against his heart and complete his mission and let his wife die. The inability to go against his heart can be analogized to the irrational Eros-driven energy of the unconscious that once it comes into the awareness of the Logos-driven rational conscious ego cannot be denied.
