Synopsis: Lt. Commander Dax, Chief O’Brien, and Dr. Bashir, aboard a miniaturized runabout, help the crew retake the Defiant after it has been boarded and taken by Jem’Hadar soldiers.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of how a complex, containing bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious, can upset the best laid plans of the Logos-driven rational conscious ego.

In “One Little Ship” a runabout is sent to explore a space compression anomaly, which shrinks the ship and her crew to a fraction of their original size. Meanwhile, the Defiant is attacked and boarded by Jem’Hadar soldiers. On the Defiant, the Jem’Hadar leader forces Captain Benjamin Sisko and his crew to repair the vessel’s engines. The miniaturized runabout is able to enter the Defiant undetected and assists Sisko and his crew with a plan to retake her.

If in this episode we analogize the miniaturized runabout to a complex, and the Jem’Hadar soldiers to the conscious ego, we can see how a complex can erupt and deter even the best laid plans. An elder Jem’Hadar tells Sisko in this episode that his leader has been bred in the Alpha Quadrant specifically to do battle there. This can be compared to how the conscious ego believes that it has a mission in life, and like the Jem’Hadar, victory to it is life. However, the psyche also contains the unconscious, which the conscious ego cannot fathom in total, but bits of material rise up at certain times, to try to inform the conscious ego that there is something in the psyche that needs to be paid attention to. If the ego is unaware, or ignores these bits of psychic energy, the results are, well let’s say, not harmonious. If however, the ego acknowledges and integrate the bits of the unconscious material into itself, it becomes stronger and the psyche more whole.
