Synopsis: Voyager’s crew comes across an alien communication array which is capable of reaching the Alpha Quadrant.
If we analogize the Federation vessel in the Alpha Quadrant with the Logos-driven rational conscious ego, and the Delta Quadrant to the Eros-driven irrational unconscious, then this episode can be seen as an illustration of one of Carl (C. G.) Jung’s theories of how complexes can make the conscious ego aware of bits of information from the unconscious that need to be attended to.
In “Message in a Bottle” Seven of Nine discovers an alien communication array which seem capable of sending a message into the Alpha Quadrant as well as a Federation vessel within range. An audio communication is not strong enough to make it that far, so Captain Kathryn Janeway enlists The Doctor’s holographic program to make the journey. The Doctor gets through, but is surprised to find that the Federation vessel, the USS Prometheus, has been taken over by Romulans. Although there are many obstacles, and Romulans, between The Doctor and his goal, he is able to make contact with Starfleet Headquarters and return safely to Voyager.
In this episode if the Prometheus can be analogized to the conscious ego, and the Delta Quadrant to the unconscious, then The Doctor can be seen as embodying a complex. Especially, as here, where I am calling a complex a way in which the unconscious can send a message to the conscious ego. Janeway’s audio communication was not strong enough to break through to the Alpha Quadrant, just as sometimes the first time the unconscious tries to bring bits of its material to the attention of the conscious ego. But then a stronger method of communication is used, in the episode a holographic image, in the psyche, a more forceful method of communication may be used. But when the conscious ego acknowledges the information and integrates it into itself, it becomes stronger and the psyche more whole. Just as here, when The Doctor returns to Voyager, feeling victorious in having been able to tell Starfleet about Voyager’s plight, and learning about their determination to bring Voyager home.
