Synopsis: Aliens steal bits of Voyager’s technology, and Captain Janeway and Tuvok enlist the aid of the holodeck Leonardo Da Vinci to retrieve them.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of how a complex can work to bring bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious to the attention of the Logos-driven rational conscious ego.

In “Concerning Flight” alien ships use a high energy transporter beam to remove bits of Starfleet technology from Voyager. The alien vessels are tracked to a planet where they have brought the equipment, including Voyager’s computer processor. Captain Kathryn Janeway and Lt. Commander Tuvok go to investigate and are surprised to see that a character from a holodeck program, Leonardo Da Vinci, is on the planet and is wearing The Doctor’s emitter device that allows him to move freely. Da Vinci has a patron, Tau, who is also the weapons dealer who stole Voyager’s equipment. Da Vinci has information and is able to lead Janeway to where the computer processor is being stored and also allows her to use the flying machine that he has created to escape the thieves who took Voyager’s equipment.

In this episode the holographic Da Vinci can be seen as analogous to a complex, if we define a complex as a way to locate information that the conscious ego otherwise would have no access to. Da Vinci had been in contact with the underworld figure, Tau, who stole Voyager’s computer processor, it’s computer brain so to speak. Tau has given Da Vinci access to his possessions and funds to create a flying machine that Da Vinci and Janeway are able to use in their efforts to return to Voyager safely. This can be compared to how a complex brings bits of information from the unconscious, and when the conscious ego acknowledges it and integrates it into itself it becomes stronger and the psyche more whole.
