Synopsis: Captain Sisko’s fleet arrives at Deep Space Nine, and after the minefield is destroyed, he takes The Defiant into the wormhole to ask the Prophets for a miracle.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of how the Eros-driven irrational unconscious can sometimes rescue the Logos-driven rational conscious ego.

In “Sacrifice of Angels” Captain Benjamin Sisko and his fleet, aided by an armada from the Klingon Empire, fight to regain Deep Space Nine, but are unable to stop the destruction of the minefield outside the wormhole that was keeping Dominion vessels in the Gamma Quadrant. Sisko then takes the Defiant into the wormhole and speaks with the Prophets. Sisko asks them for a miracle, and they grant it. They destroy the Dominion vessels that enter it from the Gamma Quadrant. This allows Sisko to retake Deep Space Nine.

In this episode, one way to interpret it is to analogize the Starfleet and Klingon forces as symbolizing the rational conscious ego and the Prophets, perceived as gods to the Bajorans, as embodying the irrational unconscious. When Sisko asks the Prophets for a miracle, it is as if the rational ego understands that it cannot run the psyche alone, that it needs the unconscious as well. When Sisko, recognizing the power of the Prophets, asks them for help, they oblige. This is similar to how when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of material from the unconscious, it becomes stronger, and the psyche becomes more whole.
