Synopsis: Captain Sisko learns that the minefield outside the wormhole will be destroyed and takes the fleet to Deep Space Nine to try to stop it.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of how eventually the Logos-driven rational conscious ego will be unable to stop bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious to come into its awareness through a complex.
In “Favor the Bold” On Starbase 375 Captain Benjamin Sisko learns that the Dominion forces have a sensor array that has been giving them advanced information on Starfleet movements. Meanwhile on Deep Space Nine, Major Kira Nerys and Quark are able to get word to Sisko that the minefield, which is all that stands between the Alpha Quadrant and overwhelming Dominion forces, will be destroyed in a week. Sisko, unable to wait for reinforcements, leads whatever vessels he can assemble to the station.
One way to understand this episode is that if the Dominion and Cardassian forces are thought of as analogous to the irrational unconscious and Starfleet as the rational conscious ego, the ego is in absolute survival mode against an onslaught of unconscious material. This can be compared to what happens when a complex, which is itself bits of unconscious material, becomes so disruptive to the conscious ego that the ego will do everything within its power to defeat or suppress it. Whether this is always possible, is another matter.
