Synopsis: Captain Janeway is determined to retain her alliance with the Borg

This episode can be seen of how the Logos-driven rational conscious ego can behave like the scorpion in the fable, just as in the first part of this episode seemed to illustrate how it could handle the scorpion, which it perceived as the Eros-driven irrational unconscious.

“Scorpion, Part II” opens with Captain Kathryn Janeway aboard a Borg cube, hailing Voyager, and telling Commander Chakotay that she has created an alliance with the Borg. However, when a Species 8472 vessel attacks them, the Borg cube is destroyed in its defense of Voyager, while Janeway, Lt. Tuvok, and several Borg drones are transported to a cargo bay. Janeway is severely injured and Chakotay assumes command. The Borg drone, Seven of Nine, receives a message from the collective to seize Voyager and take it to the fluidic space of Species 8472. When Seve of Nine begins complying with this order, Chakotay ends the alliance, depressurizes the cargo bay, sending all the drones into space except for Seven of Nine. Janeway then recovers from her injuries and confronts Chakotay about disobeying her orders. She reestablishes trust with Seven of Nine as they head into war with Species 8472. After Voyager wins the battle, Seven of Nine then again tries to assimilate Voyager and Janeway orders her connection to the collective be severed.

In this episode, we see how Janeway, who as I have mentioned in previous posts, seems to embody the rational traits of Starfleet, also has no problem at all in doing whatever it takes to protect her crew. It is her nature, just as it is in the scorpion’s nature to sting whatever animal is nearest. And while often this trait might be associated with the instincts of the irrational unconscious, it seems as in this episode, it can also be analogized to the motivation of the rational conscious ego, as embodied by Janeway.
