Synopsis: One by one members of Voyager’s crew disappear and are replaced by aliens.

This episode illustrates one way in which bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious can come to the awareness of the Logos-driven rational conscious ego.

In “Displaced” aliens from Nyria III appear on Voyager at the same moment in time that crew members disappear. Eventually, Captain Kathryn Janeway and the crew that has been displaced from Voyager figure out a way to alter The Doctor’s program, so that he can detect a portal to escape from where they find themselves. They discover that they are on a large vessel that contains 94 different biosphere environments. They then discover how the Nyrians have been able to abduct the crew and use the Nyrian technology to take back the ship.

In this episode, when Janeway feels a knot in her stomach, this is a bit of unconscious material trying to warn her that there is something going on that the rational ego cannot sense. She tells Commander Chakotay that something is wrong and immediately does not trust the seemingly innocent Nyrians when they arrive on her ship, even though that would be Starfleet protocol. Janeway also continues to trust her hunches throughout “Displaced” and by following her instincts, is able to return her crew to their rightful place. Janeway’s knot in her stomach and hunches, can be seen as bits of material from her unconscious. Here, when she heeds what they are telling her, instead of ignoring them, she is able to save herself and her crew. This can be analogized to when the conscious ego acknowledges and integrates bits of unconscious material into itself to become stronger, and the psyche more whole.
