Synopsis: Captain Janeway and her crew try to stop Henry Starling from taking the timeship into the future.
This episode is an illustration of how far the Logos-driven rational conscious ego will go to avoid bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious coming into its awareness.
In “Future’s End, Part II” Voyager’s crew is in 20th century Earth, trying to stop Henry Starling from taking the timeship he discovered decades earlier into the 29th century, and thereby creating a rift in time causing the destruction of Earth’s solar system. Starling is able to launch the timeship into space, but Voyager fires upon it, blowing it up. Then another timeship from the 29th century appears to escort Voyager back into the 24th century, and all is the same except that Starling has given the doctor a device that allows him to move about the ship.
In this episode, Voyager’s crew can be seen as analogous to the rational conscious ego, that does not acknowledge the need for any material from the unconscious in its perception. Starling can be seen as representing an embodiment of the unconscious, because his desires are in opposition to the wishes of the Voyager crew. While Voyager’s crew wants to prevent him from using the timeship and thereby causing the destruction of the solar system, Starling states that he wants to go to the future to bring back knowledge to make life better for those living on Earth in the 20th century. Voyager destroys the timeship, which can be compared to the rational ego getting its way by suppressing the danger from the unconscious.
