Synopsis: While Voyager is hosting a race with telepathic abilities Lt. Torres has dreams that are really disturbing memories that were implanted in her psyche.
This episode is an illustration of how a complex works to bring bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious into the awareness of the Logos-driven rational conscious ego. A complex in depth psychology is not something necessarily negative, but it is an opportunity for an individual to integrate bits of one’s unconscious into the conscious ego and become more whole.
In “Remember” Lt. B’Elanna Torres starts to have very vivid dreams. So vivid that she reports them to Commander Chakotay. This is while Voyager is providing transportation to Enara Prime to a group of Enaran citizens. At a reception, the crew unexpectantly learns that the Enaran’s telepathic abilities allow them to transfer memories into others. When Kes finds Torres unconscious and brings her to Sick Bay, The Doctor tells her that she is not dreaming, but instead memories are being placed in her unconscious. He also tells her that this process is damaging her brain. Captain Kathryn Janeway and Torres go to speak to the Enarans about this, and they assure them that Enarans don’t plant memories without permission. Torres then goes to see one of the Enarans that has been assisting her in Engineering, Jor Korenna Mirell. Mirell has been gravely wounded and before she dies she tells Torres that she was attacked because of the memories that she is sharing with her. Memories that the others have tried to cover up, but which must be known. The memories are of an extermination of a group of individuals, the Regressives, on the planet. Torres then goes to confront the Enarans about the death of Mirell and the extermination of the Regressives. The elder Enarans do not admit to hiding this bit of history from their descendants, but Torres is able to find one young Enaran who is willing to receive the memories.
In this episode, the character of Mirell can be seen as a personification of a complex. Mirell reaches out to Torres and implants her memories into her because there is some vital information that needs to be known. This is analogous to how a complex will break through into the awareness of the conscious ego because there is something in the unconscious that needs to be addressed. In the episode Torres did speak truth to power and it looks as if she started a change in at least one Enaran. This is similar to when the conscious ego acknowledges the bits of unconscious material contained in a complex, it is on the way to healing itself and making an individual more whole.
