Synopsis: Captain Sisko leads an infiltration team to expose the Changeling placed highly in the Klingon Empire.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of what can happen when the Logos-driven rational conscious ego allows bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious to integrate into itself, making it stronger and the psyche more whole.

In “Apocalypse Rising” Captain Benjamin Sisko and his infiltration team are altered to appear Klingon, and head into Klingon space in order to expose the Changeling, whom they originally believe is Gowron, the leader of the High Counsel. They are exposed as Starfleet officers by the Klingon Martok, who then aids them in escaping confinement so that they may kill Gowron. But just as Lt. Commander Worf is about to kill Gowron, Security Chief Odo realizes that it is not Gowron but Martok who is the Changeling. Martok is killed and Gowron, grateful for their service to the Empire, calls for a temporary cease fire so that Sisko and his team may return safely to Deep Space Nine.

In this episode, we see how Odo, newly transformed into solid humanoid form, learns to trust his hunches, or in depth psychological terms, allows his conscious ego to integrate bits of unconscious material into itself to make it stronger. His instincts go against the thoughts that were planted in his consciousness when he was in the Great Link, yet he trusted them, and saved the day, and avoided an almost certain escalation of hostilities between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.
