Synopsis: Captain Sisko and Odo are summoned to Earth to try to defend it from a perceived threat from the Dominion.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of one way the Logos-driven rational conscious ego responds to bits of material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious, when it is perceived as a threat.
In “Home Front” Captain Benjamin Sisko and Odo are called to Starfleet Headquarters on Earth to help defend the planet against an invasion of shapeshifters. Admiral Leyton and Sisko go before Federation President Jaresh-Inyo to encourage him to take certain security measures. When he does not agree to all suggestions, there is an attack on Earth’s power grid, after which he declares martial law.
This episode can be seen as analogous to how the rational conscious ego will go to great lengths to protect itself from what it perceives as threats to its stability from bits of material from the irrational unconscious that comes into its purview through a complex. Complexes can be instruments of change that allow for psychic growth, but in order to do so, the ego must be willing to acknowledge bits of unconscious material and integrate them into itself. Here this is not the case, but the episode ends with the teaser: “to be continued” (Behr et al., 1996), so we may see if another approach to a complex is yet to come.
