Synopsis: A transporter malfunction causes the physical patterns of crewmembers to be stored in Dr. Bashir’s James Bond-like holosuite program.

This episode can be seen as an illustration of how the Logos-driven rational conscious ego feels that it is separate from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious, but how both must be joined so that the psyche can be more whole.

In “Our Man Bashir” crewmembers returning to Deep Space Nine are aboard a shuttle. The shuttle has been sabotaged and the crew needs to beam up to the station immediately. However, there is a transporter malfunction, and instead of materializing, the station’s computer must find a way to store their patterns until they can be safely transported. The computer stores their physical patterns in a running holosuite program of Dr. Julian Bashir, which has him embodying a James Bond-like spy. Their brain patterns are stored everywhere else on the station, until the patterns can be reunited.

This episode is an example of how Western culture, which here can be analogized to the computer running Deep Space Nine, tends to support the theory that there is an inherent separation of the mind from the body. This is illustrated here in how the crewmembers’ physical patterns, representing the irrational unconscious, are saved in a holosuite program, while the crewmembers’ brain patterns, comparable to the rational conscious ego, are stored everywhere on the station except where the physical patterns are. This dualistic mindset, while it is the predominant one in Western culture today, was not always the way the world was perceived. The first step to understanding the world as being inclusive is to recognize that there is more than one way to see and comprehend it.
