Synopsis: Lt. Commander Dax is reunited with the current host of the symbiont who was the wife of Tobias Dax.

This episode can be seen as an unusual illustration of James Hillman’s acorn theory. This is his concept that just as each acorn has all the information inside it to become a tree, inside each individual there is an inner daimon, that has all the knowledge we need to be who we are meant to be.

In “Rejoined” Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax is unexpectedly reunited with Dr. Lenara Kahn. Kahn being the symbiont host that was once the wife of the Dax symbiont host Tobias. In spite of the taboo of hosts of symbionts reconnecting with hosts of symbionts that had a previous romantic relationship, Dax is ready to risk it all to be with Kahn.

While the situation here, in which a physical symbiont is placed inside a host body is alien, the symbiont can be analogized to our psyche’s inner daimon, that spirit or soul that is placed within a human body. Here, the Dax symbiont knows who it loves and knows that it wants to be with its mate. Meanwhile the Kahn symbiont knows who it loves, but also knows that duty comes first. Both hosts act in order to follow the wishes of their symbionts. Which can be seen as how individuals are bound to listen to their inner daimons in order to become who they were meant to be.
