Synopsis: Voyager comes in contact with a spacial disturbance ring which reconfigures the structure of the ship.
In this episode if Voyager can be seen as a physical manifestation of the Logos-driven rational conscious ego, outer space as the Eros-driven irrational unconscious, then the spacial distortion ring that the vessel comes in contact with can be seen as a representation of a complex.
In “Twisted” out of seemingly nowhere a spacial disturbance ring appears and disables Voyager’s engines. The ship cannot move away and once the ring comes in direct contact with her hull, the vessel’s systems and very structure are altered. The crew tries everything that they can think of to escape from the disturbance which causes them to lose all control over Voyager and themselves, until Lt. Tuvok advises them to stop fighting it. Once they do, they realize that the ring was just trying to communicate with them.
This is similar to what the conscious ego may feel when it is confronted with bits of material from the unconscious through a complex. And while the word complex tends to have a negative connotation in popular culture, another way to look at a complex is as an opportunity to learn more about one’s self. This is because a complex is how the psyche alerts the conscious ego that there is something in the unconscious that needs attention. When an individual is able to heed this message and the ego is able to acknowledge and work with the bits of the unconscious material, the ego becomes stronger and the psyche more whole.
