Synopsis: The plan for a Romulan and Cardassian joint attack on the Dominion fails.
This episode can be seen as an illustration of what Carl (C. G.) Jung would call an occurrence of one-sidedness of the Logos-driven rational conscious ego.
In “The Die is Cast” we learn of a joint plan between the Romulans and the Cardassians to go through the wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant and destroy the forces of the Dominion’s Jem’Hadar before they can mount a force to come though the wormhole to the Alpha Quadrant and try to conquer them. The Romulans and Cardassians overestimate the strength of their plan, and their forces, and are fairly annihilated by the forces in the Gamma Quadrant who anticipated their attack and overwhelmed them with the military strength of the Jem’Hadar.
Much as I wrote in my last post on the episode “Heroes and Demons” from Season One of Star Trek: Voyager, the actions of the Romulans and the Cardassians can be seen as a physical manifestation of the Logos-driven rational conscious ego when it is behaving as if it is in charge. By doing so they are blindsided by the forces of the Jem’Hadar, here representing material from the Eros-driven irrational unconscious. However, unlike in “Heroes and Demons,” there is no shift in perception that would allow the Romulans and Cardassians to rethink their military strategy. This is much like what happens when the conscious ego does not acknowledge bits of material from the irrational unconscious. When bits of unconscious material are suppressed they only become stronger when they confront the conscious ego again, and eventually can no longer be ignored.
