Synopsis: After going through a magnascopic storm the Enterprise gives birth to a new intelligent life form.
This episode is an illustration of how between the Logos-driven rational conscious ego and the Eros-driven irrational unconscious there is a third thing or in between space, that Archetypal Psychologist James Hillman called the metaxy.
In “Emergence” after weathering a magnascopic storm the Enterprise seems to be developing instincts of self-preservation, or as it turns out, the instincts of protecting its child. This is evidenced by the ship’s jumping into warp to avoid an outside danger from a distortion field and creating a forcefield around developing “cellular nodes” inside the vessel.
Somehow in between the Logos-driven rational computer system aboard the Enterprise’s new instinct for self-preservation, which is a drive found in the Eros-driven unconscious, there was a new third space or metaxy created. The metaxy is a place of imagination, and on the Enterprise, that place of the imagination was the holodeck. Where the Enterprise integrated the fantasies of the crew into its own circuits to bring a new life form into being.
