Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 7, Episode 22: “Bloodlines”

Synopsis: The Ferengi who tried to kill Captain Picard in the episode “The Battle” returns, this time threatening to kill a man whom he claims is Picard’s son.

This episode is an illustration of what happens when one does not follow the guidance of what Archetypal Psychologist James Hillman would call our inner daimon that contains all we need to fulfill our destiny, much as an acorn contains all it will need to become an oak tree. Hillman called this concept the acorn theory.

In “Bloodlines” the Ferengi Bok, who has now been stripped of his title of DaiMon, has enlisted the help of a young human man to aid him in another scheme to seek vengeance against Captain Jean-Luc Picard for the death of his son, who was aboard a ship that Picard ordered fired upon when he was the Captain of the Stargazer. Bok has the DNA of the young man, Jason Vigo, altered – re-sequenced – so that when he is tested by Dr. Beverly Crusher he will appear to be the son of Picard. However, by altering Vigo’s DNA, Bok has caused him to develop a neurological disorder.

Here we can analogize our physical DNA to our psychic daimon, that part that makes us unique and who we are. We can try to ignore it and appear to be something that we are not, but to attempt to do so is to act to our detriment. In “Bloodlines” by altering Vigo’s DNA Bok put him in jeopardy of death by neurological imbalance. But when this is discovered, Dr. Crusher is able to treat Vigo’s condition, and restore him to wholeness. Similarly, to try to ignore our daimon, that which is who we are, we are putting our psyche in jeopardy of imbalance. And just as when Dr. Crusher discovered the altered DNA, when one who is feeling hopeless and in despair recognizes that these emotions are being caused because one is not fulfilling one’s inner destiny, then actions can be taken to bring that element of the psyche into one’s life and make the psyche more whole.
