Synopsis: Dr. Bashir and Chief O’Brien try to help end a centuries-long war between two peoples.

This episode is an illustration of how sometimes the Logos-driven rational conscious ego will fight to keep itself free of bits of material from its Eros-driven irrational unconscious, even if it means killing off bits of itself in order to do it.

“Armageddon Game” begins with Dr. Julian Bashir and Chief of Operations, Miles O’Brien on a TLani cruiser, helping scientists safely dispose of stockpiles of biohazardous weapons that both the TLani and the Kelleruns had been using against one another during a war between their two peoples that had lasted for centuries. This included eliminating not only the weapons themselves, but also all data that contained information about the weapons. What Bashir and O’Brien did not know, was that in order to make doubly sure that the weapons would never be used again, the governments of the two peoples had also decided to kill off all the scientists that had any knowledge of the weapons, which now included Bashir and O’Brien.

This can be seen as analogous to how sometimes the rational ego will go to extremes to prevent any contamination of bits of material from the unconscious to enter into it. Material such as instincts, cravings, and any other needs of the body. The drive to do so results in a one-sidedness of the psyche and is impossible. What is especially striking is that when a rational ego attempts this quest it doesn’t realize that this urge to defend itself from all unconscious material is in and of itself a bit of unconscious survival instinct. The idea that the ego can prevent contamination from the unconscious is an error in logic.
