Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 7, Episode 12: “The Pegasus”

Synopsis: Admiral Pressman, who was Commander Riker’s captain aboard the starship Pegasus when Riker was her helmsman, comes aboard the Enterprise.

This episode is an illustration of how the Logos-driven rational conscious ego has to make an accommodation when it is forced to integrate bits of Eros-driven irrational unconscious material into itself.

In “The Pegasus” Admiral Eric Pressman, who was the captain of the starship Pegasus when Commander William T. Riker was on his first assignment as helmsman of that vessel, comes aboard the Enterprise. Although the Pegasus had been officially recorded as being destroyed, Pressman tells Captain Jean-Luc Picard that Romulans may have found her wreckage and that the Pegasus was a prototype and that it is vital that whatever is aboard her does not get into Romulan hands. Pressman orders Riker to not give Picard any additional information about the matter. However, Picard, sensing something is wrong investigates on his own.

In the course of events Picard finds out that the equipment that was aboard the Pegasus was illegal, it had been created in violation of a peace treaty with the Romulans. Using it would save the Enterprise, but it would also let the Romulans know that Starfleet had violated the peace treaty. Picard uses the equipment and the Enterprise is saved, but not without consequence.

This is much how the rational ego approaches bits of unconscious material that come into its perception. If the ego can acknowledge and integrate the bits of material, like Picard was able to integrate the technology into the Enterprise, the psyche is made stronger. However, when this is done the rational ego is made aware that there are bits of unconscious material that have been integrated into it, and sometimes this can be an uncomfortable understanding.
