Synopsis: The crew of the Enterprise are visited by Q and a young woman they thought was human but who is also Q.
One way to interpret this episode is as an illustration of James Hillman’s idea of the acorn theory found in his book, The Soul’s Code. The acorn theory, in a nutshell, is that deep inside every individual, even before birth, there is found an internal daimon, and this daimon contains the knowledge of what our purpose in life is, even to the point of selecting the parents to whom we will be born to, that will either help or become necessary obstacles to overcome as we develop into who we are destined to be.
The honor student brought aboard the Enterprise to intern with Dr. Beverly Crusher, Amanda Rogers, was raised as a human, but as she enters adolescence she came into her omnipotent powers as a Q. As her birth parents were killed when she was young and she was raised by adoptive parents on Earth, she had no idea what was giving her the power to do what she was now able to do, until she met Q aboard the Enterprise. And while up until that point she had planned a human existence, Q introduced her to the idea of coming into her own, to be what she truly was. By honoring who she was, accepting the knowledge of her inner daimon, her life was immensely expanded. And while human daimons do not give us omnipotent powers, by acknowledging them in ourselves and honoring them, our lives will also be transformed and greatly expanded.
