Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6, Episode 11: “Chain of Command, Part II”

Synopsis: After Captain Picard is captured by the Cardassians he is tortured.

In this episode, while Captain Jean-Luc Picard is being tortured, an unnamed interrogator lets slip that when he was six years old he was bullied. Picard then tells him that from this point he will think of him as being: “six years old, weak and helpless” (Abatemarco & Landau, 1992).

This is an example of projection. Picard is putting onto his torturer the projection of a weak six-year-old boy who was bullied and became a bully. While Picard tells the interrogator this in an effort to rattle him, in actuality by doing this Picard is able to see him in a different light. However, in order for Picard to perceive this projection on the interrogator, there must somewhere in his psyche exist a part that can relate to being a weak six-year-old boy. A complex if you will. And Picard’s reaction to his interrogator, his defiance, while it is conscious, it is fueled by the energy from the bits of unconscious material that integrated with his ego to strengthen the psyche.
