Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5, Episode 24: “The Next Phase”

Synopsis: A transporter malfunction causes Lt. Commander La Forge and Ensign Ro to disappear, and are presumed dead, but they are instead alive just invisible to the crew.

In this episode Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge and Ensign Ro Laren are actually caught in what could be interpreted as the science fiction equivalent of the metaxy, James Hillman’s name for the in-between place, between the conscious and the unconscious, the place where soul is made.

La Forge and Ro have been phased, in that they are not dead, and they are also not living in the same plane of existence as the rest of the crew of the Enterprise. Yet, it is because they are invisible and unable to be heard that they learn of a plot that the Romulans have devised to destroy the Enterprise, and they save the lives of all aboard her.

This can be compared to how when individuals access the place between the conscious and the unconscious, they are able to create a third thing, a thing that sometimes is interpreted as soul, and by doing this, they can become more psychically whole.
