Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5, Episode 12: “Violations”

Synopsis: Counselor Troi, Commander Riker, and Dr. Crusher fall into comas after their memories are attacked.

In this episode, we can see how memories can be sources of both pain and healing. And while in “Violations” the attacks were made by an alien who specifically targeted psychic attacks on the memory centers of Counselor Deanna Troi, Commander William Riker, and Dr. Beverly Crusher, these types of wounds are inherent anytime there is trauma.

At the end of the episode, Tarmin, the leader of the Ullians, the race of memory retrievers, says that it has been over 300 years since such a psychic rape has occurred on his world, but that there are still medical records on how to deal with it, and that the best doctors on his planet will aid the three officers in their recovery. Just acknowledging the psychic damage associated with trauma of any kind is the beginning of the healing process. That is true whether it is an injury that one has experienced, or an ancestral trauma that has been suppressed for generations.

We are all wounded in some way, and it is the working through those wounds, especially the unconscious ones, that is the purpose of depth psychology. With the understanding that anyone who does this work, even just to try to make their own psyche more whole, is also contributing to make more healthy the anima mundi, the soul of the world.
