Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5, Episode 7: “Unification I”

Synopsis: Captain Picard and Lt. Commander Data are sent to Romulus to locate Ambassador Spock who has been sighted there.

There is a moment early in this episode in which Captain Jean-Luc Picard goes to visit an old friend of his, Ambassador Sarek, the Vulcan father of Ambassador Spock. Sarek is very ill and the individual who fought against emotion his entire life, is now unable to avoid it. Sarek says: “No more chaos” (Taylor & Landau, 1991).

This is an example of what can happen to any of us if we are too one-sided, only valuing the Logos-driven, rational, conscious ego, and suppressing the Eros-driven, irrational unconscious. It is a recipe for disaster. Through the use of complexes, which Carl Gustav (C. G.) Jung identified as being bits of unconscious material that comes into the perception of the conscious ego, we can integrate those bits of ourselves that for whatever reason we perceive as negative, in order to make the psyche healthier and more whole. Otherwise, we eventually all will feel the pain of a character like Sarek – when that which has been consciously suppressed can no longer be repressed by the unconscious and our conscious ego will be in danger of being overwhelmed.
