Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5, Episode 3: “Ensign Ro”

Synopsis: The Enterprise is ordered on a mission to stop the terrorist threat from a group of Bajoran rebels and enlists the aid of an unusual officer.

The episode “Ensign Ro” can be interpreted a number of ways from the perspective of depth or archetypal psychology, one of them being that she represents a Trickster energy that is needed to work in a way that is not Starfleet’s standard operating procedure. Another is that Ensign Ro Laren remained true to herself and honored her inner daimon.

Starfleet honors above all its Prime Directive, General Order Number One, also known as the non-interference clause which prohibits it getting involved in the internal issues of other planets. When read out in full, Starfleet officers are to value this above their ship and their own lives. Yet, when an enemy seems to be involved in the internal affairs of a planet or system, Starfleet, or at least some Starfleet officers feel obliged to act, which is in violation of the Prime Directive. Such an officer is Admiral Kennelly in this episode.

Kennelly releases Ro from prison and brings her to the Enterprise, believing that she will be so grateful that she will do his bidding without question. He is wrong in this, because Ro, while having been court martialed, does believe in the Federation and Starfleet. This is not unlike what happens when Commander Michael Burnham is released from prison by Captain Gabriel Lorca in the later series, Star Trek: Discovery. And just as Burnham remained true to herself and what she knew was right, Ro could not do what Kennelly wanted her to do because she knew it was wrong. They both stayed true to themselves and trusted their inner daimon.
