Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4, Episode 24: “The Mind’s Eye”

Synopsis: Lt. Commander La Forge is captured by Romulans and brainwashed into aiding with a plot to divide the Federation and the Klingon Empire.

While this may not be a strictly depth psychological take on this episode, “The Mind’s Eye” does illustrate something that I have felt to be true for a long while. That there is nothing that can communicate as powerfully as raw emotion.

And this is not a major plot point in this story, but it is on display very early on in the episode. When Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge is first captured and forced to endure psychological torture in order to be “conditioned” to fulfill the role that the Romulans have thrust upon him. The Romulan officer somehow is able to directly connect with La Forge’s brain and inject images of horror to him. The play of horrific pictures interspersed with those that bring up positive emotions is how they are able to control him. “The Mind’s Eye” is not a pretty demonstration of the power of emotions to bypass the conscious ego, but it is effective.
