Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4, Episode 23: “The Host”

Synopsis: Dr. Crusher falls in love with an alien who is a joined species.

This episode is an illustration of how we fall in love through projecting our internal ideal of a mate onto an individual. It also shows us what can happen when the person that we project that ideal upon turns out to not live up to the projection.

In this episode, Ambassador Odan is the object of Dr. Beverly Crusher’s desire. She knows that he is not human, but when she falls for him, she is unaware that his is a joined race – a symbiont being and its host. She is so unaware of this, when he is injured and winds up in sick bay, she wants to remove what she believes is a parasite growth, not understanding that what she calls a parasite, is in reality his true self.

While this is an extreme example, it is not unlike what can happen to us when we fall out of love with someone, because they are not as we initially envisioned them. Even when how we originally perceived them was not as they truly are, but as what we want them to be. However, sometimes when we see people for who they truly are and let them see us for who we truly are, love can become stronger.
