Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4, Episode 2: “Family”

Synopsis: In the aftermath of the fight with the Borg the Enterprise and her crew stay on Earth to mend themselves.

As I mentioned in my last blog for the episode “The Best of Both Worlds, Part II,” Captain Jean-Luc Picard after his time as the almighty ego-inflated Locutus is now only Picard, a damaged, vulnerable version of his old self, with a deflated ego. And this is how he finds himself in the episode “Family.”

Another interpretation of this, from an archetypal psychological perspective, is that Locutus represents a manifestation of the Senex archetype, the all-power father figure, or wise old man. And Picard, is now physically, the polar-opposite archetype, that of the Puer. The Puer, the eternal youth, has come back to his family, because he needs to be comforted. Surprisingly, this parenting takes place in the form of his elder brother, Robert, who we are led to believe has been jealous of Picard for all his life. However, a fight breaks out among these two brothers, they roughhouse, they play in the mud, and they meet somewhere in the middle, between Senex and Puer. And it is in this middle ground, this metaxy, where soul is made, and healing can happen.
