Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 2, Episode 19: “Manhunt”

Synopsis: Lwaxana Troi comes aboard the Enterprise looking for a mate.

In “Manhunt” once again the holodeck affords an opportunity to observe how the use of projection of our inner opposite works to attract us in the act of falling in love. In this case, it is the inner animus of Counselor Deanna Troi’s mother, Lwaxana Troi that is projected onto a male figure in a holodeck program.

What is fascinating is that the male figure in the holodeck program, Rex, the bartender of the fictional Rex’s Bar doesn’t exist. Mrs. Troi does not know this. Mrs. Troi is a Betazoid and able to read a person’s thoughts, albeit in this episode she is going through what Counselor Troi explains is called “the phase,” that time in a middle aged Betazoid female’s life that quadruples her sex drive, and her reasoning abilities may be a bit off as well.

Mrs. Troi is fascinated by Rex because she can not read his thoughts. Because she is going through “the phase” she doesn’t realize that he is imaginary, and instead becomes infatuated with his obvious adoration, almost worship of her. Earlier in the episode Counsel Troi remarked to her mother that her late father, who was an Earth man, worshiped Mrs. Troi as well. Also, being that Mrs. Troi’s conscious ego is able to hold the thoughts of so many individuals she passes in her head, it would make sense that her inner opposite would have no thoughts at all. Because the opposite of many, is of course none. It is our inner idealized opposite that an individual projects upon another, and that other being willing to hold the projection, that occurs when we fall in love at first sight.
