Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 2, Episode 4: “The Outrageous Okona”

Synopsis: The Enterprise rescues the captain of a small cargo carrier and learns that he is an integral part of the relations between two planets.

In “The Outrageous Okona” the character of Captain Okona is described by Counsel Deanna Troi as being a rogue, but without malicious intent. This could very well describe Hermes, the Trickster entity of ancient Greek mythology.

Hermes shakes things up, is a messenger, and a catalyst for things to come. Much as the character Q, who appeared in the premier episode of the series, except without supernatural powers.

As a Hermes-like character, Okona states that he lives by his own rules. He is also a messenger between different worlds. Here not Olympus and the Underworld, as in ancient Greek, but between the two planets Straleb and Altec.

At the end of the episode, it is learned that Okona has been a messenger between the daughter of the ruler of Altec and the son of the ruler of Straleb, in a Romeo and Juliet sort of romance. But here, unlike in the Shakespearean tragedy, the two lovers bring their families, and their planets, into a more harmonious understanding. Which is fitting, because Hermes was also the inventor of the lyre, which he created out of a turtle’s shell as his first act after being born.
