Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1, Episode 19: “Coming of Age”

Synopsis: On Relva VII Wesley Crusher takes his test for admission to Starfleet Academy at the same time that Captain Picard is considered for promotion.

This episode seems to illustrate a bit of an in between place. Acting Ensign Wesley Crusher taking his exams for Starfleet Academy while Admiral Quinn and Lt. Commander Dexter Remmick board the Enterprise under somewhat false pretenses, but really to judge Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Both Picard and Crusher are put in the position where they are betwixt and between, and this is the space that James Hillman calls the metaxy, the in between place where soul is made.

Crusher does not pass the exam and is therefore caused to remain in stasis, that is his present place, and Picard turns down the position, again causing him to exist in his current place. Yet, by being offered the opportunity to expand their horizons, they are not completely where they started, they are now in the metaxy, that place between what is known and possibility, or in a more popular cultural concept, in The Twilight Zone.
