Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1, Episode 12: “The Big Goodbye”

Synopsis: To relieve some stress before an important encounter with a non-Federation race, Captain Picard enters the Enterprise’s newly upgraded holodeck only to be trapped inside it when it malfunctions.

In “The Big Goodbye” the holodeck, while it has been seen in earlier episodes, plays its first major role. While on the surface, the holodeck could be interpreted as a place of dreams and fantasy, perhaps a way to present the unconscious, I argue that from a depth psychological perspective, the holodeck can be seen as a rational Logos-driven conscious ego perception of the unconscious, not the unconscious itself.

The holodeck is an alternate reality created by the Enterprise’s computers, which are strictly rational. When there is a true disruption to the way it works, the effect of the alien probe upon its circuitry, that is the real manifestation of the unconscious. The break in the efficiency of the ship’s systems, a physicalization of a complex.

After the damage in the programing is found, it is the insight of the Eros driven human crew members, who are able to creatively intuit their way around the systems, in order to rescue Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the others from the holodeck. The human element that can compensate for the one sidedness of the computer’s logic and open up an opportunity for change.
