Synopsis: While in orbit above the planet Haven Counselor Troi is confronted by her cultural obligation to marry, while her pre-selected intended spouse, Wyatt Miller, is challenged by his destiny with another woman.
This episode is a physical manifestation of archetypal psychologist James Hillman’s acorn theory, as he described it in his bestselling book The Soul’s Code. Basically, the idea is that just as an acorn has everything within it that it will need to become a tree, each of us is born with an internal daimon that has within it everything we need to become who we were meant to be.
Destiny is a key theme running throughout “Haven.” While, Counselor Deanna Troi had put her culture’s mating rituals in the back of her mind, much as Mr. Spock did in Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Amok Time,” in this episode, Troi is required to submit to the impulse in order to be set free from it. This is also how our internal complexes are resolved as well. For her fiancé, Wyatt Miller, things are a bit different. He has been envisioning a woman that he would meet on Haven, assuming it was Troi, but instead, it is a woman aboard a plague ship, that he was meant to be with.
In Wyatt following his inner daimon to be with the woman on the plague ship he also released Troi from her obligations to him and the necessity to give up her life aboard the Enterprise. It was a brave and bold choice, but it was necessary for both to be who they authentically are.
