Synopsis: Dr. McCoy is charged with murder for causing a plague.
In this episode, the “Albatross” is Dr. Leonard (Bones) McCoy’s potential involvement with causing a past plague in the Dramian Star System. McCoy is arrested and held for trial. McCoy, in an inflated state, thinks that he may have caused it.
Also in this episode Captain James T. Kirk is an action driven rational, conscious ego determined to exonerate McCoy. Kirk and the Enterprise pass through an aurora, a naturally occurring phenomenon outside the crew’s control, and no thought is given that it might be the aurora, not McCoy responsible for a past alien plague. That is until the Enterprise passes through the aurora again, and there is no doubt that it is more powerful than the ship and her crew. Only then does it cross Kirk’s and Mr. Spock’s minds that this natural energy, similar to the unconscious in a psyche that might be at the root of the issue. It takes the crew of the Enterprise to become infected with the same illness for Kirk and Spock to understand that it was a larger power that caused the plague, it was beyond McCoy’s abilities to do so. At that point, McCoy becomes a hero when he finds a cure for the disease. This is much like how the rational ego has to acknowledge that there is something larger than itself, the unconscious, which is capable of creating illness as a way of making its presence known. But once this truth is accepted and the symptoms addressed, the psyche can become more balanced.
