Synopsis: An Orion ship steals medicine Mr. Spock needs to recover from a fatal illness.
In this episode Mr. Spock is inflicted with an illness that if left untreated is fatal to Vulcans, and the one drug that will save him is stolen by a crew of Orions before it reaches the Enterprise. The Enterprise follows the Orion ship into an asteroid belt and once there, Captain James T. Kirk bargains with the Orion captain for the drug. However, neither side seems able to live up to the bargain; yet Kirk prevails, and Spock’s life is saved and the Orions are taken prisoner to face prosecution for their crimes.
This seems to mirror how the rational ego deals with a piece of the unconscious that becomes known to it in a complex.
That something is amiss in the psyche is reflected in Spock’s illness. In order to heal, one thing is needed. Kirk, symbolizing the ego goes out to obtain the cure, encountering multiple obstacles, including the theft of the cure by another race. Kirk must bargain with the Orions to obtain the drug, just as the rational ego must work out some way to deal with the unconscious content. Yet, neither Kirk nor the ego can actually completely yield to the needs of “the other.” However, the conscious ego, the “hero complex” of the psyche, figures out a way to get its way and the unconscious element that was being dealt with is neutralized. Kirk and the ego move on to their next adventure.
