Synopsis: The Enterprise is sent to the Arcadian Star System to locate Harry Mudd.

In “Mudd’s Passion” once again Harry Mudd is found on a planet trying to sell something that will bring love. This time a crystal, which actually does what he says it will, it breaks down the defenses of the conscious ego so that it can receive input from emotions from the unconscious. However, there is a cost.

It is no accident that Mudd offers this magic crystal to Nurse Christine Chapel, who is attracted to Mr. Spock, an individual who more than anyone else on the Enterprise is cut off from his emotions. The crystal acts like a complex, in that it alerts Spock’s Logos-driven mind that there is Eros that needs to be attended to. But just as Spock remarks that a few moments of love lead to hours of hate, the conscious ego dealing with repressed unconscious elements in a complex is not easy. Yet it is necessary for any attempts to move forward and integrate the unconscious with the conscious ego.
