Synopsis: The crew of the Enterprise finds itself in the position to protect Cyrano Jones from the Klingons.
When the crew of the Enterprise encounters a small scouting vessel being chased by a Klingon Battlecruiser in Federation Space, they have no idea who is piloting the one-person ship, only that they are duty bound to protect it from the Klingons. This causes Cyrano Jones to be beamed aboard the Enterprise with what he claims are “safe tribbles” because they do not reproduce. Jones also has with him a Glommer, a technically engineered living tribble predator, which he took from the Klingons – which is why he is being chased and accused of “ecological sabotage.” However, far from being “safe” the tribbles do not reproduce, they simply internally create colonies of like-minded tribbles.
The idea of a safe tribble is akin to the idea of a safe bit of unconscious that makes its way through a complex to the conscious ego of a psyche. It is a bit of a fallacy. But that being said ignoring a “safe” complex can make it bigger, just as the tribbles aboard the Enterprise fed on grain, again intended to save the population of Sherman’s Planet, became bigger and bigger, incorporating multiples of tribbles within a unifying collective entity. Dr. Leonard (Bones) McCoy, believing something was amiss, was able to diagnose what was going on with the tribbles, now tribble colonies, and create a method whereby the tribble colonies could be safely restored to normal sized tribbles that were then able to be dealt with. Just as acknowledging the unconscious bit, or wound, at the core of a complex, and trying to figure out what “makes it tick” so that it can be addressed, is the only real solution to dealing with a complex – integrating it with the conscious ego.
