Star Trek: The Original Series Season 3, Episode 9: “The Tholian Web”

Synopsis: While investigating what happened to the Starship Defiant, Captain Kirk is caught in interspace.

In this episode Captain James T. Kirk is physically caught in a space between two universes, which can be interpreted as a physical manifestation of what James Hillman calls the metaxy.

The metaxy for James Hillman is where soul-making happens. We can imagine it as being between the Earthly body and the spiritual realm, and a place where connection between the two is possible. This in-between place of meeting is also reflected in the final orders that Kirk gave Mr. Spock and Dr. Leonard (Bones) McCoy. Especially when Kirk told Spock to use every scrap of knowledge and logic he had but to “temper your judgment with intuitive insight.”

In “The Tholian Web” Mr. Spock wants to believe that he can save Kirk, because when the Defiant vanished into another reality, Kirk was caught in the transporter system. He rationally wanted to believe, but it was not until Lt. Nyota Uhura actually saw Kirk appear before her that we knew that he was still there. We did, but McCoy and Spock did not believe her until they saw Kirk appear for them before their eyes. These glimpses of Kirk are like our own brief flashes of insight, gifts from Hermes, that we should welcome and not ignore.
