Synopsis: A transporter malfunction results in Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy, Lt. Uhura and Chief Engineer Scott materializing in a parallel universe.

In “Mirror, Mirror” it is quite easy to make the connection between our universe representing the conscious ego and the parallel universe that Captain James T. Kirk, Dr. Leonard (Bones) McCoy, Lt. Nyota Uhura, and Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott find themselves in as the unconscious. The parallel universe thriving on the earthy and bodily wants and needs – lust for power, sex, and wealth. Although there is also found both brutal punishment for disobeying any order and the way to advancement being to destroy one’s superior. The adherence to discipline being a conscious choice however, made as a means for survival.

This is compared to “our” universe, in which the parallel officers were easily identified, as Mr. Spock tells Kirk it is much easier for a civilized person to appear brutal, than for barbarians to come across as civilized.

There is one plot point though that is not in line with the going into the Underworld of a savage parallel universe. For “our” Kirk tries to use logic on the parallel Spock, to motivate him to change his universe to be more like the one we are associating here with the conscious ego. In our lives however, it is much more likely that a parallel, unconscious Kirk would appeal to a conscious Spock to try to let a little of that universe seep into ours.
